DETERIORATING VALUES IN SOCIETY
“Charity begins at home.” The dictum long heard has lost its value and today it stands out as a misnomer. The declining values in the society pose a great threat to the generations to come. If things stand out in this way, it is quite sure that charity, sympathy and magnanimity would soon be wiped out from the society.
I have always been proud of the children in our colony, the sort of unity they exhibit, the friendship they possess and their innocent ways. But I am deeply hurt by this particular incident from the part of these kids of whom I have always felt proud.
During the Christmas season, the children arranged a Christmas carol and they went to the member flats of the association, singing songs with Santa and sweets for the family members. The amount collected came to around Rs 2000.The expenses of the carol and later a few parties and the needs of the children were met out of this amount. Finally, around Rs 600 was left. When suggested to donate a part of this amount as charity for the betterment of the orphaned children. A minority readily agreed. There remained the majority who, though reluctantly agreed. May be after a few brainstorming sessions, they came back with the decision to divide the money among themselves, each getting around Rs 50. The former minority was interested though.
This sort of mentality exhibited by the kids shook me. I was really taken aback as I was not prepared for such a response. People say, “Money rules the world.” Is that why they wanted to gobble up those 50 bugs? It is truly disheartening.
This polluted air, water; the environment has polluted these young minds, a very saddening situation. Who is to be held responsible for this degeneration? The answer to this complex question is really complex. Each may have his/ her own answer, but the fact remains- Deteriorating Values Pose a threat upon future Generations. The reluctance to sacrifice in this small gesture approves that all the hue and cry for sustainable development is a waste. The young minds must first be ignited to lend a helping hand to the needy. Pray this awareness is definitely the edifice on which the future generations will sustain…
:) we have more and more moral education classes nowadays! Still, we are indeed losing out on the most basic of virtues..
